The story of
SPIER ESTATE
With a legacy dating to back to 1692, Spier is both one of the oldest and most awarded wineries in South Africa. Over the past two decades, the Spier winemaking team has attracted meaningful international recognition.
Spier exports wines to several key traditional and emerging markets, in particular having grown and consolidated its equity in the South African and Danish markets. As a leisure and conferencing destination, the Fair Trade Tourism accredited Spier Hotel and conference facilities have become a landmark business travel destination in Stellenbosch. Commitment to responsible farming practices, pioneering environmental and social initiatives and artisanal farm-to-table restaurants on the farm has contributed to Spier’s reputation for progressive thinking.
The organisation also has a deep regard for the role of art in society, and is renowned for it’s significant contribution to the South African arts economy.

Growing For Good
With Spier Growing For Good, Spier invests in initiatives that empower their communities to make a positive social and environmental change. Ranging from art and entrepreneurship to regenerative farming and more, their projects and partnerships are creating a ripple effect of lasting and meaningful change.
Arts & Heritage
Inspired by creativity and craft – both old and new – we’ve meticulously restored the farm’s beautiful Cape Dutch buildings. Inside these as well as across our grounds and in the Spier Hotel, you’ll find artworks from the Spier Art Collection – one of the largest collections of contemporary works in the country.
Water
100% of Spier’s black and grey wastewater is recycled using a centralised wastewater treatment plant. The environmentally-friendly plant has the capacity to process up to 1 million litres at any given time, and the clean water is then used for flushing in the washrooms and to irrigate gardens and lawns on the property.
Growing Businesses
Spier helps entrepreneurs — many of the former employees — to launch and successfully run their own small businesses. The range of support we offer these start-ups includes mentorship, finance, equipment and facilities. Purchasing guarantees at launch also provide the entrepreneurs with the income they need to get their businesses up and running.
Love The Land
Because each employee is an ambassador for Spier and its values, every new member of the team participates in a five-day training course that explores environmental and social challenges. The course forges an understanding of the role their employees can play in a global society, encouraging them to create a positive and meaningful impact as ‘agents of change’.
Tree-Preneurs
Spier provides land, facilities and a manager to drive Tree-preneurs in the Cape. This project teaches members of impoverished communities how to care for indigenous plants. Once the seedlings they’ve been given to nurture are big enough, these are exchanged for food vouchers, clothing, bicycles, educational support and other essentials.
